International surfers show extraordinary slalom action
Best conditions, with wind forces up to seven beaufort, led to a day without breaks for the competitors of the IFCA Slalom Youth & Master European Championships at Schoenberger Strand. During the fifth day of the regatta, the surfers completed three slalom eliminations, for the category youth (Under-20) as well as for the master (Over-35) division. The title candidate Bernd Flessner (GER-16, F2, Neil Pryde) from Germany, approaches the Master European title more and more. Today he defended his first position in the overall ranking of the Master division. In the category Youth Maciek Rutkowski (POL-23, Starboard, Maui Sails) from Poland is on top of the overall ranking and on the way to the title.
The fifth event day showed itself at its best for the international competitors. Fantastic conditions with wind peaks up to 30 knots required everything from the surfers. After yesterday's light wind, these conditions were perfect to attack again. Especially Bernd Flessner (GER-16, F2, Neil Pryde) took the chance to extend his lead in the masters fleet, as he finished the day with two first places and one second place. The European Championship Master title is within Flessner's grasp. Hard on his heels is Helge Wilkens (GER-63, Starboard, Gun Sails) from Germany, who reached three top 3 positions today. Thade Behrends (GER-94, Exocet) from Germany remains on the third place, but Alexander Lehmann (GER-373, Fanatic, North) is very close behind him. Just two points divide Behrends and Lehmann who is still fighting for a place on the podium. He will get his chance tomorrow. The fifth place is still in the hands of the Italian Luis Marchegger (ITA-6, JP, Gastraa).
This morning the category youth started with the final of slalom elimination number eight, which was started the day before. William Alikiagalelei (FRA-540, AHD, Loft) from France won this elimination ahead of Sebastian Koerdel (GER-220, Lorch, Neil Pryde) from Germany and Maciek Rutkowski (POL-23, Starboard, Maui Sails) from Poland. During the day two more slalom eliminations of the youth fleet could be completed. On top of the overall ranking is Maciek Rutkowski (POL-23, Starboard, Maui Sails) from Poland. Teade de Jong (NED-777, Mistral, North Sails) from the Netherlands and William Alikiagalelei (FRA-540, AHD, Loft) are following. On position four is Jacek Piasecki (POL-013, Starboard, Neil Pryde) from Poland with a ten points gap. Position five goes to Thomas Gaudiot (FRA-909, Starboard, Gun Sails) from France.
The final day of the IFCA Slalom Youth & Master European Championships promises more exciting slalom eliminations. 5 - 6 Beaufort is forecast for the final decisions. The prize giving of the IFCA Slalom Youth & Master European Championships is scheduled for 16:30. It will take place at the Seebruecke at Schoenberger Strand.
